Unburned hydrocarbons are only a by product of a bigger battle.

Petro-politics have caused spent shell casings,

and infected resource rich countries with dutch disease, preventing societies from developing.

Fluctuations in market prices create unstable economies where building projects are left unfinished.

And all the while, states that had the most to gain, have gained the least.
