The morning started calm. A dim light broke through the ground fog, creating a surreal vista from the front porch. I wasn't ready to leave yet, hesitant to rejoin what I had left. The stillness was broken by a crackle in the trees. I turned to look in time to see a doe staring me down; it appeared she was wondering about me. I broke the stare before the doe and turned to look in the opposite direction. The ribbon beckoned me. The road away from this sanctuary. Unsure, I loaded my few belongings and struck out, heading for life as I knew it. A crazy life.
