about this story

It was time for a break, a break from the screens and the videos and the real and fake news, all of it. A drive to the beach seemed ideal. Close the laptops, pack a picnic basket, toss some books into the backpack. Yeah the phone was in there, but it was closed. When it's closed, it's off, right? Unplugged? But you have to consider emergencies

Parking was a nightmare at Pine View beach. Was everyone getting away from it all? We ended up parking at that abandoned convenience store off of 8th street. But then we got lost. the signs were no use, and reluctantly pulled out the phone to check the maps.

That was the mistake.

Because they had tracked the license, identified our location, and emailed us the parking ticket when the Prius was towed. What nightmare. We got the court summons (as it was the 5th violation, they posted an alert to our Facebook page, those rats).

In court the tribunal took no pity on our stories of data fatigue. We learned that the web was more than strands, it was managed by nasty spiders.

And even looking at the coffee cup at Starbucks we wonder about that chip embedded on the bottom of the cup.

Maybe we need a day at the beach...
