about this story

I've never understood the fetishization of apple picking. Every fall, city streets are abandoned as vest and infinity-scarved city-dwellers pull on their crisp new L.L. Bean boots and drive to an orchard to... I guess get up close and personal with the supply chain. These are the same folks who pile onto cruise ships every summer to pound all you can eat shrimp and sit by a pool that is not all that different from any of five pools within five miles of their home.

Generally speaking these committed outdoor adventurers can also expect that these orchard visits will necessitate waiting for far too long to eat at a diner (somehow still described as rustic despite the oppressive crowds of fellow apple pickers) that will inevitably leave you feeling bloated in that, "do I really even like pancakes" way. If you're lucky and have chosen "let's take the scenic route home," your apple picking adventure will end in what you hope is an abandoned parking lot in a desperate attempt to find a suitable location to use the bathroom.
