about this story

I never thought I'd miss the cold and snowy winters of the Midwest. I enjoyed sledding and the snowball fights as much as the next kid, but they weren't past-times, more like "pass-times."

Now I understand that the cold winters forged appreciation for the other seasons. Without the memory of bone-chilling winds it can be difficult to appreciate humidity so heavy and thick that you can't see through it. A winter without ice storms and power loss, forcing you indoors, will reduce the urge to play in the rain.

Winter is the rainstorm before the rainbow of the rest of the year. Rainbows would be less magical if they didn't stand in contrast to their wet and grey origin stories. What if rainbows only appeared after a solar eclipse, wouldn't it just be like, "eh."

This isn't to say I don't appreciate a beautiful day on its own merits. Not everything derives its value from a comparison. I will do my best to enjoy today because it is worth enjoying.

And at least its not raining.
