As a child in the refugee camp, Jack always dreamed of a better life. On TV he'd seen ice cream piled so high and with so many toppings that you could rot your teeth just looking at it. One advantage to eating only crumbled millet logs was that they contained no sugar and did not harm the teeth.

When he reached 18, because he was born in the camp and had American citizenship, Jack could no longer be detained. He set off with only a bowler hat and a government issue pair of jeans and black shirt, on a bus bound for San Francisco.
