When I think of my worst night here at Amherst, one in particular comes to mind. I was barely into the swing of finals, and already I was feeling the pressure. I had to write a ten page paper on a twenty minute surrealist film by the next day. In French. It was an independently chosen topic, of the list of topics we could choose, so I couldn't rely on my shoddy notes or a last minute brainstorming session with classmates. After watching the movie, translating, taking notes, and drafting a pitiful outline, I was feeling pretty good. I looked at the clock, and my heart fell. It was 2 in the morning. My paper was due at noon. I assumed I was screwed. I resigned myself to interment with students of French classes past in some dusty tomb, far beneath the freshman quad... I stepped outside for some fresh air, and despite the late hour, called my brother, who was in his freshman year at college. Despite knowing nothing of the arduous hardships I was struggling through, as a sophomore in college, restlessly hacking away at this ten page behemoth, he gave me a few words of encouragement and the motivation I needed to persevere. I turned my paper in 3 hours late and took the point deduction, but I was happy to be sage on the other side.
