about this story

He was a serious young fellow and he wanted to understand the world. He no longer wanted to be penned in by fences, doorways, gates. And so he went out. His finer sensibilities were disturbed by what he saw---the dead pterodactyl, the wrecks in traffic. He turned at a little shop called Safety and studied the devices. There was one that a child could strap over his chest to protect his heart from rude contact. He stared at it. It was a piece of plastic. He didn't want to wear a piece of plastic against his skin, always being reminded of the possibilities of crushing accidents and wounded hearts. He threw off his hat and formal clothes, slipped on a fall jacket and went off bravely into the forest to see what he could make of himself.
