about this story

Once upon a time there lived a teacher who felt there was more than following the small narrow roads as so many teachers had before her. She was dedicated to her role of educator and worked hard to share her learning with others.

One cool winter morning she set out on the road to reform. Her first job was to change the way she taught in her classroom. Through the clearing mist she saw the light that was 21st century learning and so set up a classroom based on technology, student led inquiry and respect of students. Of course, along the way she had many obstacles. Like the roots covering a path in the forest she tripped more than once as she took risks she had never taken before.

Intriguingly, the more confident she became in her classroom that the type of education she was delivering was allowing students to fly free like a bird, the more she felt constrained with the walls that were the institutions of our education system.

Just as she felt there was no end in sight a small piece of luck fell from the sky, or more precisely the cloud. This lone teacher found a Personal Learning Network, a four-leaf clover made up of Twitter, blogging, Nings and the Ultranet. Finally she could see light at the end of the tunnel. She was no longer alone. She now had the power of the Twitterverse and blogging communities behind her, supporting her, taking her ideas and challenging her like never before.

Her PLN became the fresh start she needed. It allowed her to grow new shoots, leaving behind the frost and snow of the teacher she once was. Allowing her to blossom into an educator of the 21st century.
