I peer down the cliff the overlooks the city square of my little town. The view from up high is amazing, like peering from a soaring eagle's eye.
The city is full of color against the cloudy, gray sky. Merchants and traders are bargaining with customers from their stands, and delivery men scamper in and out of the crowds, delivering goods.
Plink! A raindrop lands on my shoulder. Time to go. I am a mountain goat, scampering down the rocky trail like I've done it for years, because I have. The cliff is my sanctuary; no one knows about it and no one will.
The town is surrounded by a 12 ft high brick wall, with guards patrolling every possible entrance. Since the cliff is out of town, I have to find a way back in without the guards noticing me.
It's very simple, actually. There's an abandoned train tunnel that leads through the brick wall that used to transport coal into our town.
It is almost dinnertime by the time I am in the city square. Despite the rain, a crowd has formed in the square. People are laughing and cheering.
It is raining enough to form a lake in the city grounds. I push through the crowd to see a horrible sight.
My older brother, Kelvin, is being pummeled by an older man in his early twenties. The other person is punching him menacingly in the face multiple times.
"Stop!" I cry. I leap in front of my brother just before the other man aims a kick at his stomach. His foot hits my stomach instead. I double over in pain, but I stand my ground.
"Get out of here!" the man yells angrily. "This fight is between me and him." He points at my brother, who is now unconscious.
"No. I refuse to leave."
"Bad choice, girl." The man attempts to punch me in the face, but I leap back.
A guard pushes through the crowd and tackles the man. He gets dragged off.
Someone helps Kelvin and I back home. I lay on the couch while my mother treats my brother, who is in worse condition.
I only got hit once, but it hurts so bad I feel like passing out. I heard you could die from one powerful punch or kick in the abdomen. I wouldn't be surprised if death knocked on my door. Well, my home doesn't have a door, only a gate with a flower on it. The flower is a symbol for good luck, and I can only hope for the best for my brother and I.
I wake up to my mom waving a newspaper in my face. I sit up groggily. I must have fallen asleep.
"Mia, Mia, look!" she exclaims. I take the newspaper and look at the front page. The headline reads: "100% Heroine. Brave sister protects brother from well-known gangster."
"You made the front page!" My mother says happily. "That gangster man is dangerous, and always escapes from the police. Because of you, they caught him! I'm so proud of you." She gives me a bone crushing hug.
Who knew a little bravery can go so far.
