The removal of an ancient native American statue from its sacred grounds caused a rift of unrest as many masked protesters held back demolition crews from the scene, al the while happening on fat Tuesday, mardi gras, and the protest continued until Christmas when the demolition crews finally took down the statue and made way for a 5-star hotel. A small memorial is held a block away from the site where potted peyote plants grow in a garden of other cherished native American herbs.
