about this story

The angel gazed at the approaching figure. "Could this be the one? Will I finally be free?" The figure had its own thoughts, mostly about the difficulty of walking across the shifting sand.
"This is ridiculous," thought the figure. "How do I get myself into these things?" As it closed in on the angel the fog dispersed a bit. The figure, once mysterious and looming, resolved into the dripping, bedraggled form of a young girl. If you could take a peek beneath her hood, without being too rude about it, you might notice the green-tipped, slightly pointed ears.
As she dripped and looked up at the encased angel, she should have been thinking of all she had learned about freeing such unfortunate creatures. Instead, her thoughts were of the home she left behind. The tree that had sheltered and nurtured her. She shook the drops out of her eyes and focused on the statue's rusty base. The runes must be here, she thought, but she was reluctant to touch the metal surface.
