i met her at a park
she sat on a bench reading Kierkegaard and taking sips out of a starbucks cup. when i sat next to her in the hopes that i might work up the courage to talk to her, she leaned over and whispered,
this isn't coffee
just so you know
it's
moscato
her wildly curly hair floated around her face when she laughed her delight at my expression
she offered me some, but i declined
she tsked and downed the rest of the cup
it wasn't until two weeks later that i got up the courage to ask her on a date
she never made it to the restaurant
i didn't know her, but the fragility of life made me angrier than i had ever been
i stormed onto rooftops
screaming
too much had been stolen
not just lorelei
i took off that night
left my job
left my apartment
left anybody who considered themselves my friends
tromping through the woods, i could feel the claws of my anger
feel them trapped in my heart like burrs in wool
i woke covered in dew to the softest sound
like her laughter
a moth with a broken wing drifted into morning sunlight and out of view
