about this story

My last memory is of the red bowl, filled with batter, almost ready to be popped in the oven. I remember that day so clearly. But now, it's like my mind is a blank canvas, and the stories of my life are butterflies floating higher and higher out of my reach, like the Halls.
The Halls are the wonderful buildings that I live in--understatement of the year!! (in the per, buildings; wonderful). I have been living in the Halls-really The Relaxing Chicago Hall Apartments-- for six years, ever since my parents went missing. All I remembered was a phone call, that I answered, looking for Phillip and Valerie Moss.
The person on the other end of the phone (my dad's co-worker) had reported them as "missing persons." She'd said that my dad and mom hadn't showed up for work that morning, and so she'd called the police (she was a bit melodramamtic). Actually, though, it turned out that she had been right to worry. That day, as I sat alone and rigid in our apartment and the police came to explain that my parents weren't coming back, my eyes fell on the pink flowers that my mom had picked just that morning, in a vase on the kitchen windowsill. A mix of cynthias and daisies.
