about this story

Pardon the period terminology, but it feels proper for Mattie Ross.

I went for a midday meal at the Corner Cafe. It was close to my boarding house, and I felt too hungry to wait for supper. The telephone pole at the corner had some strange ad for what looked like a Negro woman. I paid it little mind, and entered the cafe. The other patrons only looked to me briefly before returning to their pastimes. As I waited for my service, I noted an ornate support beam along a wall. Even simple cafes are convinced that folk want fancy city decorations instead of small-town charm. The menu was written in kind, so I asked for a green salad. I got it, and ate my meal in peace.
