about this story

It started out like any other day at the arcade; full of lights, sounds, noise and excitement. Eventually, she gravitated towards the one game she had yet to conquer. After playing all morning, she had scrounged up a fair number of quarters. It was time. She was going to conquer the ski-ball machine today if she spent every last 25cent piece she had. It didn't matter that she had no hand-eye coordination, or that she had literally never sunk a ball despite having tried hundreds of times at this point. She was determined.

As the hours dragged on and her stock of quarters dwindled down to nothing, she accepted her defeat. She set off for home in the icy drizzle so common in the waning days of February. As she entered her modest apartment, she took down a bottle of wine she had been saving for the past few weeks. After today's lose, it was her only comfort. As day turned to dusk, she slowly entered a happy state, one where the lights and noise swimming through her head reminded her of hope and possibility.
