about this story

Avery stood at the window, watching Bess, the family cow as she moved placidly around the paddock. She scuffed her shoes on the bare wood floors. She hated this new house. None of her things had arrived yet, and with no curtains the sunlight shone too brightly through the windows. She wanted her old room. In her old brick apartment in the city with its little windows and it's perfect stoop and concrete to walk on. Not this muddy grass and smelly cow pasture. Yesterday, she and her brother had gathered all the oddities they could find in the meadow. Weird pods and slimy things that Davis had been fascinated by, but she had not wanted to touch.
"Mommmmm!" she yelled. "Mommmmm! There's nothing to do! I'm boorreddd!"
Her mother appeared in the bare doorway, looking worn and weary, and old dishcloth slung over her shoulder. "Bored?" she replied. "Good! The furniture just arrived, and it's as dirty as all get out. You can start dusting." With that, she flung the rag at Avery, and walked out.
Avery stood there, holding the towel. It was going to be a long, long day.
