The leaves crunched underneath my heavy hiking boots and the wind whipped back the leaves on the nearby. I looked over the hill for the first time since I had left the city. The path ahead was barren and lifeless, while the sight behind was bright and welcoming. Reluctantly I turned back, a grim smile resting on my face.

I thought of the strange series of events that had sent me into the woods at this ungodly hour. There was the stone face outside the church and the stranger that had caught staring and started ranting about Funidolare. The bright blue beetle that drove me there and the piece of parchment with the big X on it.
