about this story

We'd been planning this day for weeks, as the end of school got nearer and nearer. That Saturday, after the last day of school, Janelle and I would embark on multiple adventures to ring in the summer!

What better way to start a Girls' Day than at the beauty parlor? By 10:15 a.m., Janelle and I were letting ourselves be pampered by my aunt and her staff at Dawki's Beauty Lounge, getting our hair styled and enjoying manicures and pedicures while sipping on ice-cold Diet Cokes Dawki gave us.

When we walked out, we were sure to stop to take a selfie of our beautiful selves. It turned out great, and the photo did a good job of illustrating just how much fun we were already having.

Next stop: the diner for lunch! Andy's place has the BEST grilled-cheese sandwiches and malts of any place in the WORLD! We stuffed our faces and laughed as we imitated our favorite and least favorite teachers from 7th grade.

That afternoon, we spent a few hours at the zoo. Our favorite was the panda bear, so we made sure to take a picture of her. The zoo is one of our favorite afternoon outings, and I'm sure we'll get back very soon.

Finally, walking home, we felt like having a snack. The best and freshest produce comes from the sidewalk outside Manny's Grocery. The picture we took here shows you how busy it can be--so many people come to pick the best pomegranates. Janelle and I got blueberries. We ate most of them along the rest of the way, but what we saved we put in our ice cream that night while watching a movie at home.

It was a wonderful first-of-summer day.
