In the first chapter we meet the characters. The different feet represent the various roles each character will play in the story. Atticus, the father, is an attorney. He is also a single father, raising a 12-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl. He is clearly the source of truth in the story because he explains life to the children and does so without belittling their intellect. He has been a resident of the Maycomb county all his life and knows its people well.
