about this story

I knew I shouldn't have trusted my gps. Where am I? Danny must have given me the wrong address. It's in the middle of the hottest summer that California has seen in years, and I can't believe I'm walking through an empty field, trying to find Danny's mysterious house.
Oh look, a rusty fence! Maybe Danny lives in the yard behind it.
Finally! I see Danny's lovely red brick home peering from behind the dark branches of a tree. He sees me approach from his window and yells for me to come around and meet him in the front yard.
"The kids are sleeping." He silently mouths.
I walk around his unkempt but strangely beautiful mess of a yard and meet him on the other side of his home.
"Gasp!" I exclaim. I didn't realize I was this close to a busy neighborhood. I feel like I've been trudging through the wilderness for so long that I almost forgot what it was like to be in the presence of people.
Danny meets me, wearing that ugly pink shirt that he is always wearing. I've decided I'm going to stop criticizing it because Danny is going through a rough time with his wife and she already verbally degrades him enough. I'd rather not be another negative voice in his life right now.
"Hey Buddy," Buddy is both my first name as well as a term of endearment that Danny calls me. I think I'm gonna take you to the beach.
"Fine." I say reluctantly. What I don't realize is that Danny has bought both of us tickets for a boat ride to a secluded island. When we arrive I take a black and white picture of some sand dunes and post it to my instagram. It gets 17 likes. My personal best.
