The first picture resembles a zombie, which is sort of what Melanie, the main character, is. The second picture represents spring because it is when Melanie decides to keep count of the days since she can't go outside. The light kind of looks like one you would see at a prison or military base, which is where the story is set in. The graves are because Melanie and her classmates are all dead, but controlled by a parasite that keeps their bodies going. The heart is the love that Melanie has for one of her teachers, Miss Justineau.
