Every one of us go through something everyday, be it that even if you are in a group of friends/people or alone it messes up and darkens our minds and often we close our doors to anyone.
That's why we have to understand this as well as not it only happens to ourselves but also to others. We don't know what kind of wave one has experienced.
Just like how John just received an unpleasant news over the phone regarding his relative which turned his world upside down and blurry for a whole month, which made him close all this doors and windows for anyone.
But despite this, Fred, as his good o'l pal since high school. Fred knows he's not okay and might not open up and John may have been a bit cold on him when they left from work, he knows its only because something bad might have happened.
Instead of being offended, Fred little by little tried to lighten him up and be there for him as fighting a battle alone is hard.
