about this story

Patricia Smith Churchland was born in Oliver, British Columbia, and grew up on a farm in the South Okanagan region. Both of her parents did not complete high school; her father and mother dropped out after grades 6 and 8, respectively. Churchland's first academic appointment was at the University of Manitoba. It was here that she began to make a formal study of neuroscience with the help and encouragement of Larry Jordan, a professor with a lab in the Department of Physiology there. Churchland met her philosopher husband, Paul Churchland, while they were both enrolled in a Plato class at the University of Pittsburgh, and they married after she finished her B.Phil at Oxford. Mark M. Churchland and Anne K. Churchland, both neuroscientists, are their children. She has been editor of several book collections of essays, and has contributed chapters to several anthologies and to science or philosophical dictionaries, such as the Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Neuroscience.
