I, too, am America,
the scary white person,
a little girl with fire painted on my face,
the oppressor of too many.
(Pic 2)
I, too, am America,
hiding behind my pane of shame,
while also a woman stuck behind my window,
often wondering what freedom is.
(Pic 3)
I, too, am America,
looking up to the oppressed,
like a cat looks at its guardian,
knowing that they deserve my admiration, they made America.
(Pic 4)
I, too, am America,
tossing stones in the same ponds,
and pennies in the same fountains,
while making the same wishes.
(Pic 5)
I, too, am America,
eating in the kitchen with Hughes,
never sending him away, because
We sing America.
