As I stood in that ubiquitous New England church in the center green of Falmouth, Massachusetts about to embark on a whole new adventure, I thought about how my life had changed from 2 years prior when I met my future husband in this very same place. His best friend, a German exchange student and my girlfriend majoring in German got married right here at the beach. Little did this German lawyer and American businesswoman know then that our chance meeting that lasted less than 24 hours would take us around the world and turn our lives upside down—in a good way. Fast forward to today where I am now thriving in a career that I love passionately at Virginia Commonwealth University innovating learning around student success. How ironic that as the daughter of a teacher, I deliberately did not choose teaching for my career in college. "Teachers do not make any money", I would always say. But when I serendipitously found myself in the classroom in the mountains of East Germany where there was a need for English and Business teachers, the fire was ignited from within and I have to think that there is something innate in my genes that calls me to teach. So, what would I say to that young idealistic girl in the long white dress about to upend everything she had known? Embrace the uncomfortable, for the more places you experience and the variety of people you meet will expand your mind and grow your heart—and it's worth it!
