Stanza 1:
I, too, am America
The optimist who believes in the dream,
But sometimes so focused on abundance,
I forget it takes a team.
Stanza 2:
I, too, am America,
The student who works with others to get things done,
The teacher who guides and joins the class,
The diverse faces of everyone.
Stanza 3:
I, too, am America,
The fireman who rushes to save lives,
The lonely, homeless man on the corner,
Wishing he belonged to their hives.
Stanza 4:
I, too, am America,
The honey bee that stings,
Some want to kill me, afraid to be stung,
But freedom rings in my wings.
Stanza 5:
I, too, am America,
The flower that invites the warrior bee,
The family that welcomes Hughes to the table,
So, to be stung sounds good to me.
