about this story

I, too, am America,
I walk and skip in many different shoes,
I listen to the people, crickets, and the news,
Sometimes I'm happy and sometimes I'm blue.

I, too, am America,
The baby turtle many of us don't see,
The scary hand that gently holds me,
Hi America, now please let me be.

I, too, am America,
The lives of so many buried in my land,
When I think of you, I take a stand,
For you are my forever band.

I, too, am America,
The night driver headed home,
The mother on the other end of the phone,
I speak with love in my tone.

I, too, am America,
A message in a bottle that sings loud and clear,
Hughes and all are invited here,
Come to my table and wipe that tear.
