about this story

It’s 5.30 in the morning, but here, along the Canadian-United States border, it is bright out. I snuck out of my bedroom, grabbed my coat and slipped on my boots. It was cold out– probably about 50 degrees, but that didn’t stop me from exploring the woods outside of grandpa’s house. The sky was a blue-ish color with puffy white clouds, with an endless row of mountains, the kind of view you could never expect to see back in Michigan. I strolled out to the forested area near a small lake, leaves crunching under feet every step. I walked over to a long deck that led to the center of the lake, my hands brushing past the overgrown grass along the wooden planks. I could feel the cool mist dotting my skin and dew collecting on my fingertips, how I wish it was like this back home. I walked for a while longer, taking whatever path I saw, not caring where I’d end up. I soon reached a little alley in a small local town. Although I was out of the woods, the environment didn’t change– I could still feel the mist in the air, the mockingbirds singing their sunrise song and the amazing view of the countryside. The path eventually took me back to my grandparents cabin. It was 7am. Grandpa was leaning against the railing outside the front door, a mug of coffee in his hand.
“Had fun?”
“Yup”
“Wanna stay?”
“Yup!”
