about this story

Meet Feo (1), a peculiar beetle who had big dreams. You see, Feo was raised in a caterpillar commune, Flower Wilds. During elementary school, he fit right in with his spikey and slithery friends. They ambled about the forest floor playing classic games like Juice the Beetle and Hungry Hungry Caterpillar. Then they moved to middle school, and folks, including Feo himself, seemed to realize that he was different. Everyone started talking about wings and craving sweet nectar. When his former friends began planning their grand metamorphosis (2), they seemed to leave Feo out purposely. Feo knew he didn’t want to be a butterfly but also wanted acceptance, so he sought to make some changes. He heard of a group called Renewal Church (3) which promised he could be normal if he just thought about it hard enough. So Feo did just that- he thought and thought. Eventually, Feo got bored of thinking and he decided to try to get a game of Juice the Beetle going again- for old times' sake. However, he quickly realized everyone else was lounging around in hammocks. He went from one corner of the commune to the other, yet all over, his old friends were just lounging. As he searched for someone, anyone, to play with, he saw a sign (4). And it hit him! Maybe the commune he called home was not really his home anymore. That idea opened his eyes to the fact that this commune was part of a much bigger ecosystem (5). Feo could stretch his legs and find other coleopterans that were into disco, musicals, and other things he was. Now, Feo visits Flower Wilds every five years to see his old friends, but he is happy with his new chosen family.
