about this story

On a cool fall day, I found myself walking down the street. I loved the sound of my boots smacking on the wet cobblestones. I kept looking up the trees on the street and feeling this sense of longing, but I had things to do and places to be. Life is always so busy these days. I found myself standing outside on my office building, mentally psyching myself up to go inside when I suddenly got this feeling- No, no, no, no. I shouldn't be going to work. I shouldn't even be here. I needed to get out of the city. I needed to go commune with nature. So I turned around, called out sick, packed my bags, got in my car, and drove out into the woods. I spent hours hiking and camping and breathing in the fresh air. I could smell the moss on the trees and feel the sun on my face. It was glorious. In Japanese culture, there is a term for a "forest bath." The idea is to bath yourself in nature and it is believed to have therapeutic benefits. And I agree- I'm feeling much better. Definitely needed that mental health day.
