A green leaf with smooth edges, a vibrant orange butterfly with black spots, a purple flower with delicate petals, and a towering skyscraper made of glass and steel.
At first glance, the images seem disconnected. The leaf belongs to a tree in a natural world, while the butterfly flutters between flowers. The skyscraper represents the built environment, far removed from the natural world.
But look closer, and a connection emerges. The leaf, the flower, and the butterfly all depend on each other for survival. Plants like the flower use sunlight to create energy through photosynthesis, and in turn, release oxygen that we breathe. Butterflies feed on the nectar of flowers, and in the process, they pollinate them, which helps them reproduce.
The towering skyscraper may seem out of place, but it too relies on the natural world. The steel and glass that make it up are mined from the earth. The people who live and work in the skyscraper rely on plants for food and clean air.
