about this story

eat the fruit, she told me, you won't regret it

i bit into the bitter flesh and juice ran down my chin

it didn't agree with me, but consented to move me beyond myself

solar systems made of plastic and glass surrounded us and we glowed too

my skin felt like bunsen burner flames and the fruit moved me beyond that, beyond the flies tapping the windows of our house

we went to a port on the other side of the world

my spirit animal was a dead fish in a pile of dead fish, but i wasn't able to figure out which one

a fishmonger nearby asked me if i wanted to buy anything

i asked him for a bus ticket home and he laughed

bus tickets are only for people who can find accept who they are and were, was his answer

i punched him in the nose and the fruit drew me elsewhere

blood dried on my fist

we went into a public library with dirty chairs and books with redrot

i pulled out a book that was older than me and the pages crumbled so i only got to read the first page

it felt familiar, somehow

the fruit was silent, but i could feel its derision

it laughed at me and i could do nothing but obey it

for the first time in my life, i hated evie and her radical ideas

when i finally returned, i could never look at her again in the same way

our children moved on and built their own lives, but we are stuck in that party, with that fruit

i feel tainted and no amount of prayer or whispering in a confessional could bring me back to that which i was

sometimes, i still try to wipe the bitter juice from my mouth and chin before i realize that it's just a memory

i will never be able to forget my reflection in the flat eyes of the dead fish
