It was a bright, spring day at the Lang Manner. The daisies were blooming and the berries ripe on the vine.
"What a perfect day for playing miniature golf!" said Becky Lang. "Should we head for the seashore?"
"Yes! Definitely!" replied her sister, Janice.
And with that the two impetuous sisters headed for Bridlington, on the Yorkshire coast, taking the train from their home near Hull.
Upon arriving, the always-present, British clouds continued their circle dance, moving together to threaten briefly, then back out to pour down sun and force the girls to take off their cardigans.
"Come on!" said Becky. "Race you to the miniature golf!"
She and Heather took off through the gardens overlooking the sea. At least, that's as far as the trail of evidence showed, according to eyewitnesses reports that placed the pair departing the train at 11:10 a.m.
"They definitely looked excited, though I felt they might be a bit young for traveling alone," said Mr. Jethrow Tull, 73 of Beverley--the last known person to have seen the two that day.
All that was found next to the Paul Bunyan statue on the miniature golf course was a wood-handled knife, laying on a piece of patterned fabric.
