about this story

Two different worlds had evolved, and yet they existed side by side. When my daughter left for Cup Town, Puffalump in hand, little did we know that that would be the very first of her travel, journeys that would eventually cover the globe.
She had extraordinary agility and strength swinging across the monkey bars during first grade. She could outrun even the boys, even in (or perhaps, only in) second grade. Still an athlete, and in her twenties, she has climbed the thousands of carved steps up through the narrow passage of in South Korea; zipped over to Lithuania to explore, standing on the dunes of the western tip gazing across at Russia, a place she yearned to go, but has only visited the airport as yet, and finding surprisingly gourmet but affordable meals, that it was cheaper to fly to Lithuania, cut and color her hair there, than to have her hair "done" in the States; traveled through Pakistan, courtesy of the British Council in a van complete with bodyguard, with other students, despite her mother's voiced concerns (at least she told us...), and cut off from the world as lawyers took to the streets. Later, she gave us even less comfort when she pointed out the plaid remnants in what was left of the dining room in the Islamabad Mariott Hotel. This image sits side by side with the picture of her in my mind wearing a scarf outside the Badrashi Mosque in Lahore.
