about this story

"Just ducky," Theodore thought as he glided along the pond on another cold and dreary autumn day. "Gray again, and on my birthday."

A sliver of sunshine sliced through the clouds, but Theodore didn't seem to notice. Theodore tended to see the clouds and the shadows instead of the sunshine.

Theodore found himself reminiscing in his usual dark places he traveled on these dark, gloomy days. "Will I ever return to my castle," he pondered, "my library, my books. How could I have squandered that time when I was more than a duck in a very small pond, but a great thinker, a great ruler, of not only this pond, but of all I could see?"

"Another year, another year on this pond," he cried. And as he sobbed, with no answers, no solution ... only questions -- and bleak forecasts in sight, he found himself facing a brick wall.

"Happy Birthday to me," Theodore muttered. "Happy Birthday to me."
