the victorian london toyshop closed early on this dark wintery night. the steam-powered toys relaxed, clanked and sighed with a hiss of gauges, dials and mechanical fingers. glass eyes dulled as electrical sparks died and wind-powered voices quieted. as the clock struck 1 am, the toys knew they could safely come back to life without human eyes seeing and human hands reaching for their switches. the porcelain queen's fingers tapped with impatience as her dog and samurai guard awaited orders. the evening rituals were about to begin...
