I suppose it was the deteriorated condition of the binding that first attracted me. Hours later, I was deep into the story, and at some point fell into sleep, because I was no longer reading about the road but walking along it, curving to the left until I found the last house on the right. And I knew this house because it was my home, and as I entered, the tree reminded me that it was Christmas Eve. I was five years old, and impatient to open the presents under the tree. Morning finally came, and I ran to open my gifts. And the gifts were books, and I was awake again, my gift in hand.
