about this story

At the British Library I came across a book in the rare and abused section that had not binding, and inside it had no words, except on the last page: "Angel Station, stairway 4, December 14, 2010."

Unable to ignore the coincidence of finding a book with today's date and a London underground station less than a mile away, I rushed to Angel.

Stairway 4 turned out to be a grimy set of stairs leading to a dark tunnel. Under the tube is a netherworld of quiet people in black hats, standing around barrels of flame. I soon realized how I must look to them, a stranger to their world asking them if they know anything about an old, blank book!

But my questions must have struck a nerve, because two of the men politely, but firmly pushed me to a pitch-black area behind a stairwell and told me to keep my questions to myself and put the book away.

The next thing I remember is waking up in the back of an ancient school bus, the sunlight hammering my eyes. The two men were with me and smiling now, "Sorry about that. Had to make sure you weren't with the government."
