about this story

In the early morning fog, Gary woke in a garret apartment below the wide span of the Golden Gate Bridge. He yawned, turned onto his right side, and sat up. Warm feet hit the cold cement and he stood up and stretched his arms over his head. He walked slowly to the round staircase and padded carefully down three flights to an old door with wavy glass panes.

He opened the door and stepped into the garden, where tulips, pale yellow, cream, and pink, spread around him in profusion. A spray of pink oleander touched his bare leg - it was cold.

He returned inside, washed his face, and grabbed the old denim jacket from the peg on the wall, and walked into the fog to a tiny green grocer for a cup of coffee.

He took out his notebook and began to write..."Hitchhike Haiku..."

As he wrote the phrase, he thought of his old friend, Jack, now dead, and dreamed of hallucinogenic Mexican nights.

the coffee was warm
caramel colored like dawn
he drank with delight
