After the drawing, the remaining free men cast their ballots into the fire. Those whose names were not drawn counted themselves lucky. Their hands reached out for the flames, basking in the glow of their burning names.

Some tried to bargain. They did not want to go. Their pleas were for nothing, however. The great flag needed them.

Afterward, there was a celebration. Scared, happy screams announced the presence of roller coasters. At night, fireworks filled the night sky.

But there was no joy for the chosen. Their place was the road, their destination unknown, beyond the trees.
