about this story

Stories are mirrors to yourself; your past, future, all secretly lurks within it. Whenever I'm telling stories, I marvel at all the changes that came over me these past 5 years I have spent in Canada.

Originally, I was born in Busan, South Korea. Where I was born, there were never-ending lines of buildings, and when you walked along the street, sometimes you would get the feeling that if you kept walking on, you would eventually mold with the concrete. At night, the city would be even more ravishing, glorified under its heavily lit street lamps and gaudy but yet homely LED screens.

However, as years passed by, my parents decided that it was for my best interest if I moved to Canada, where I wouldn't be restrained with "social standards" and pressure of academics. The last thing I remember from Korea is, on my ride to the airport, the salty sea of my home, lied there, calm as ever, as my mom told me, "Look on, Erin. For this may be the last time you smell the sea."

When I came here, of course, I could not speak English. I entered as a petite girl of 9, with an awkward "bob" haircut. Among these kids, who spoke a language that merely tickled my ears, I was alienated. The most lasting memory in my mind is, when we used to have show-and-tells, I was the only one, quietly sitting in the utmost corner of the room, while everybody took turns bragging about their weekends. I envied them. Then, one day, my teacher, a plump woman of mid-40's, took me under her wing, and said to me, "Erin, why don't you give it a try?" At that moment, all I could see was the the piano my teacher used occasionally play during music periods. I could say, it even had a rim of halo around it. To me, that was it. This piano could save me. So, I slowly walked over. As I sat down, I looked over my peers, as a sign that I will start now. And, so I did. I tried to express all that I've been trying to. All I could say is, after that, that piano, in room 207, became my daily corner at school.

Now, I am still in Canada. Yes, I do miss Korea from time to time. It is my birth-place, after all. Nevertheless, here, in Canada, I have friends who cherish me, teachers who urge on my education, family who support me, and most of all, Canada is part of me, as it is for all of us.
