Marike hung the final bulb onto the tree and stepped back to admire. "Kids!" she called, "Come look at the tree." They were supposed to have been helping, but instead Daniel was glued to his videogame and Mariel was grabbing her knapsack and heading for the door.
"Can't, Mom! Heading to the library!" Mariel bolted out, banging the door closed behind her, as Marike watched from the window, seeing her daughter stride down the street, stopping to giggle with one of the locals in front of the phone booth mural at the side of the bakery. It was unseasonably warm for December. "Eh." she thought. "Global Warming."
Marike looked at the tree, listened to the faint shooting sounds of Daniel's game, and decided. A rail pass to Italy was well within her holiday budget, and the kids could spend the holidays with their father.
She'd always wanted to see Venice.
