about this story

It had been a long day, and he was prolonging it with one of his compulsive forays into Second Life. His head thumped with the migraine that had inevitably become entwined with the sounds from an out-of-tune marching band in the street below. What in God's name were they doing playing at this hour of the night?

The cat, silky silver on the ledge, seemed to know more than she was letting on as reality and cyberlife merged with the familiar dizzying rapture.

The girl on the broken road was talking to him. "You are my father," she said. She spoke in Vietnamese, but he understood. A terrible sadness filled him, for the daughter he had never had.

And as the blood vessel in his head exploded, he knew his mother waited for him, passive on the deck of the lake steamer where they had last spoken.
