Mr. Luther's Home for Children stared at Lucy expectantly with raised eyebrows. Not that buildings have eyebrows...thought Lucy. My runaway imagination is what got me here in the first place. Lucy was then reminded of a song in her all-time favourite movie, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Lucy skipped up the worn stairs of the Home for the second time in her life, only this time she was not holding her father's hand.
There was a ragged boy holding a seashell up to his mother as Mr. Luther pulled them apart a few yards apart. The mother put her hands in her face and the boy called out to her. Lucy's frizzy hair danced in the oceany breeze. She glanced at the free seagulls floating in air above her. Free.
Lucy held the white tattered rose in her palm, a dying gift of her father. "Use it well," he had said. And then he had died.
~
Mr. Luther growled, and then hesitantly let go of Lucy's hand as she walked up the worn stairs the second time to her new home, and this time there was a hand holding hers.
