about this story

"This is my lucky day," thought the dripping dog. Sarcastic dripping dog. Not only was he feeling put upon by the dousing he took, but the whole thing was very unsettling. He woke up that morning in the park, as usual. He begged his breakfast from a couple of people, as usual. He was netted, collared, and dunked into a bowl of lousy flea bath--definitely not as usual. Now he sat in a cage awaiting his fate. People had been gawking and sniffing and exclaiming at him for hours. "What a cutey!""Adorable!" "Kind of scruffy, isn't he?" I didn't like the cutesy stuff, but the last remark got me. Scruffy? I was insulted. I looked out at the waving crowd and listened dejectedly to the man on stage. "Thank you all for entering the drawing. Your contibutions will be very appreciated by the staff and four-legged residents of the shelter." Hoots and applause from the crowd. "We'll now draw the lucky number."
I couldn't see what he was doing, but suddenly he yelled, Thirteen! Please come to the stage and meet your new canine companion. I hope that you have many enjoyable years together."
"This is my lucky day!" A woman squealed as she ran to the stage, brandishing her number like a shield.
