about this story

Tar. A distinct smell that I have never forgotten. Not since the oil boom. As we glided through the gate into the town, the smell hit all of us. Most did not flinch as they heard the screams of other offenders, burning in the fiery pits of oil. We have already seen and heard offenders dying, but we never imagined we would be here too.
As we stopped at the station we noticed the codes on the wall, because they were seeming to move. As if beckoning us to leave the train and go into the code world. Single file, we unloaded off the train and were told to get into 3 lines. Women, men, and children. I, of course, was put in with the children. I was 17, but it didn't matter, because I was going to die. They lead us to the walkways above the oil pits. Then they started calling names forward. The children were crying, and the adults came forth to try and calm them down. As soon as the adults stepped out of line, the guards ushered them back and yelled to stay put. I was going in soon. I didn't want to think of it, but I was trying to plan an escape. I noticed a bar hanging just off of the jump, just as my name was called an I was pushed in to the pit. My lungs started screaming for air as I rushed down the pit. Quickly, I grabbed the bar I had saw above, and to my relief, they didn't notice. There was a crevasse just next to the bar, so it seems this wasn't a new place to hide.
I found a ladder at the end of the crevasse, and started climbing. It was pitch black, and I didn't notice until I climbed into a solid rock wall. The entrance collapsed. I now huddled against the wall because I knew there was no way back. As I pressed against the wall, it crumbled away. Too shocked to speak, because of the hidden tunnel. I started to go down it, open mouthed. At the end there was a code symbol I did not understand. That is unusual because I am fluent in most written code. I pressed my hand against the unknown rune. Cold shivers ran through my body, as I was materialized into particles, then sent through the rune.
I was in the Code World.
