The bus comes to a full stop and I step out into the makeshift bazaar by the side of the road. I peruse the merchandise and,involuntarily, my hands reach out to pluck yet another Turkish evil-eye bracelet to add to my collection.

As the sun begins to set, I resolve to spend the night in this sleepy fishing village tucked between the Taurus Mountains and the Aegean coast. I understand as I peer through pine treetops and marvel at the sea for the first time, why this is called the Turquoise Coast.

In the morning, I set out inland to explore remnants of Lycian civilization that litter the region. It's only days later when I pass by the local newspaper kiosk that I focus on the photograph of the three hikers who have disappeared in the same ancient necropolis I just finished exploring. I brush the smooth beads of my bracelet...
