about this story

The jar of M&M's was sitting, waiting as patiently as a jar of M&M's possibly could. Waiting for the annual choosing, wondering if this year, the chooser would be another little blond girl, or if it would be a more mature boy. What question would the chooser ask his/her M&M about their future?
The mackerel sky shone brightly above Nora's and Tami's faces. They were excited to go to their first M&M conference. They were slightly anxious though, their future decided by...in the hands of...a single cup of M&M's?
Meanwhile, the girl's parents were at a very important meeting regarding child intelligence rates going down by 40% in the past ten years. Nora and Tami Kelley, however, had exceptionally high IQs. They had been bullied all their lives about being nerds, with their tortoiseshell glasses and endless knowledge. That is why they had come to the M&M's, to change this. To make it better.
Tami and Nora were only seven years old, eight next month. They had every right to be nervous. After all, the M&M's never lie. And if they're wrong today, it will come true within a year. They had taken to hiding behind a begonia with rather large leaves. Apparently, the M&M's had predicted a well-off grower/green thumb. Cyndi and Bethani, the girls' aunt and mother, found them and they were promptly scolded.
Finally, there they were-at the mercy of the M&M's. Nora withdrew her hovering hand, waiting above the jar. "You do it, Tami," she whispered. And Tami did, pulling a weirdly glowing green M&M from the jar. Nora
quickly grabbed another green one. The twins turned to each other and stared, wide-eyed, at each other. MATCHING FUTURES. They marched over to the also-waiting plate of sandwiches and strawberry slices, a break provided by the M&M's. Then they went hungrily on, in search of something better than sandwiches and fruit. In search of their future. okay...
