It was a mellow-golden early autumn morning; the sunlight strained through the trees to cast a warm glow over the brick of the town buildings, rising against a sky the colour of cornflowers. The shadows of the reddening branches bobbed and swayed across the burning amber of the walls of the library, infusing the air with the heavy-hearted and sweet melancholy of a new season paying homage to the old, passing one. As I proceeded towards the cemetery, the dappled walls brought a wave of yearning in me for time past, things gone and time never to be repeated.
The roses had lost their vigour and lay in heaps across the grave as if huddling together for comfort. Their colour had faded, the scent soon to be shrouded in the seasonal smoke of bonfires. On the other side of the graveyard stood Talley's fireworks, a newly painted hut decorated with an alarming poster of exploding crackers; a temporary, time-bound structure, aimed at making some money out of the season, it would return to more mundane purposes once the festive dates had passed. What the inhabitants of the graves must think of it, a symbol of the sad ephemeral nature of life! For me, it was an ugly blot rising up above the smooth unchanging headstones so cool to the touch, so serene.
The light was unusually bright that morning, as I wandered amidst those marble monuments that whispered silently of entire lives lived out in this little town. I found the voices soothing. Rays of yellow and white drew me towards a strange, misshapen tree. It looked as if it was trying to lie down and rest itself, as if age had wearied it; its trunk was bent sideways but still able to support the weight of some surprisingly sharp green-leaved limbs, well-laden and still fresh and vital. I gazed pityingly upon it, saddened to see the pain of its premature decline. A slight flicker of pure whiteness on the other side of this paradoxical creation stopped my heartbeat. An elusive vision of a light that didn't blind while yet it radiated the most unblemished moon-like glow as of a gossamer veil, coolly luminous, silently floating in slow motion. As I approached, it enveloped me lovingly; I closed my eyes and I was adrift upon the ocean's blue-white froth, with the slender white guide beckoning me on soundlessly.
